The useful thing about Riot Access is that it is not tied to one game. The thing that catches people is that it is tied to one region, and Riot's region rule is stricter than most.
One code, several currencies
Riot Access is redeemed into your Riot account as a balance. What that balance becomes depends on where you spend it:

So a single top-up covers whichever of those you actually play, and you decide at spend time rather than purchase time. If you play two Riot games, this is more flexible than buying VP directly.
One consequence: the balance converts in one direction only. Once Riot Access becomes VP, it is VP. You cannot turn VP back into Riot Access and spend it on League instead.
The region rule
A Riot Access code is issued for one region and redeems on a Riot account registered to that region. Anywhere else and it is refused — not converted at some exchange rate, not partially credited, and not refunded by us, because nothing failed on our side and the code is intact and unused.
Riot adds a wrinkle the other platforms do not have: your account region and your game server are related but not identical. You can play on a server while your account is registered elsewhere, and it is the account region that decides whether a code redeems. People who checked their server and not their account get caught by this.
How to check, before you pay
Sign in at account.riotgames.com and look at the region on the account. Or open the Riot client's store in any Riot game and check the currency symbol on the prices — dollars means a North America account.

A note on skins and the odds
Valorant and League both sell items directly, at a fixed price, and both also run limited-time bundles that create a lot of urgency.
The fixed-price purchases are exactly what they look like. If you want a specific skin, buy the specific skin.
Where it is worth pausing is the rotating bundles and the various chance-based systems. Decide the amount before you start rather than after a near-miss. We would rather write that than sell you a larger top-up.
When the code is refused
"Not valid in your region" — the code's region does not match your account's. Check the account, not the server.
"Already redeemed" — the code has been used. If you have not used it, send us your order number and we will check it against our supplier record.
"Invalid code" — almost always a typo. Paste rather than type, and check for a trailing space.
