A region-locked code is not checked against where you are. It is checked against a setting on your account — and the whole of this subject follows from that one fact.
It is why a VPN does not help, why "I live in the US" is not the same as "my account is US", and why the fix has to happen before you buy rather than after. If you already have a card in hand, this page is how to redeem it without wasting it.
The 60-second check, before you enter anything
Find your account's actual region. Not your address, not your bank, not your IP — the setting the platform reads.
| Platform | Where the region actually lives |
|---|---|
| Nintendo | accounts.nintendo.com → Country/region of residence |
| PlayStation | Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Account Information |
| Apple | Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account |
| Steam | The currency your store page displays — not a country setting |
| Xbox / Microsoft | account.microsoft.com → Your info → Country/region |
| Google Play | Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Settings |
| Amazon | The marketplace domain itself — amazon.com and amazon.com.tr are separate accounts for balance |
| Netflix | Your billing currency on the invoice, not your country |
| Roblox | Account settings → the market your account is registered to |
| Riot | The region on your Riot account |
Two of these routinely surprise people. Steam follows currency, not country — travel, a VPN used at signup or a foreign payment method can leave your store in a currency you did not expect. Netflix follows billing currency too, which is unusually generous: a dollar-billed account takes a US card wherever the account holder lives.
Do this check with the code still unredeemed. Once a code has been revealed and entered, the options narrow sharply.
Where the code goes
Not every card is redeemed in the same kind of place, and entering a code in the wrong box is a common source of false alarms.
- Steam — Steam client or website → Games menu → Redeem a Steam Wallet Code.
- Apple — App Store → your profile → Redeem Gift Card or Code.
- Amazon — Your Account → Gift Cards → Redeem a Gift Card, on the marketplace that issued it.
- PlayStation — PlayStation Store → your profile → Redeem Codes.
- Xbox / Microsoft — redeem.microsoft.com or the console's Store → Redeem.
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate — the same place, but note it starts a subscription clock immediately rather than adding credit.
- Nintendo — eShop on the console → Enter Code, or accounts.nintendo.com.
- Google Play — Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Redeem code.
- Roblox — roblox.com/redeem → it becomes Roblox Credit, which converts to Robux on the Buy Robux page.
- Netflix — netflix.com/redeem.
- Riot Access — the Riot client or account page for the region on your account.
- Razer Gold — gold.razer.com, into the Razer Gold wallet.
- Game top-ups (PUBG UC, Free Fire, Mobile Legends, Yalla Ludo) — no store at all. These go to a player ID, on the game's own top-up site — Midasbuy for PUBG. No password is ever required, and anyone asking for one is running a scam.
The three rejection messages, decoded
Almost every failed redemption is one of three things, and they have completely different outcomes. Reading the message properly is the difference between a fix and a loss.
1. "Not valid in your region" / "This code cannot be redeemed in your country"
The code is genuine; the account is wrong. Your account's region does not match the card's.
This is usually not fixable, and how unfixable depends on the brand:
- Nintendo — once the account holds a balance or has purchased, the country is effectively permanent. A dead end.
- PlayStation — Sony sets the country at signup and does not change it. Also a dead end.
- Google Play — changeable roughly once a year, and the existing balance does not survive the change.
- Apple — changeable, but only after spending the balance to zero and waiting out a cooldown.
- Xbox / Microsoft — changeable, with conditions.
Do not redeem a wrong-region code onto a second account "to test". You will consume it.
2. "Code already redeemed"
The code has been used. Two very different causes:
- You already entered it — check the platform's balance or transaction history before assuming the worst. This is the common case.
- Someone else used it first, which points at where it was bought. Codes sold far below face are frequently sourced with stolen cards and resold to several people.
3. "Invalid code"
Most often a typing error. Check for the classic confusions — 0 and O, 1 and I, 5 and S — and copy and paste rather than retyping. Also confirm you are in the right redemption box: an Amazon code entered on the wrong marketplace, or a Razer PIN entered in a game rather than at gold.razer.com, both produce this.
If it is genuinely invalid after that, it is the seller's problem to fix. On our side, start with what to do when a code is not working and then contact us — the terms are in the refund policy.
Why a VPN does not solve this
It is the most common suggestion in forum threads and it does not address the mechanism.
The check reads the country recorded on your account, or the currency your account is billed in. A VPN changes the route your traffic takes. Those are different things, and the second does not influence the first.
Beyond not working, region manipulation is a terms violation on most of these platforms, and the enforcement — where it happens — tends to land on the account and its balance together. Risking a library or a subscription to rescue one card is a poor trade.
The cases that are genuinely recoverable
Not everything is lost. Worth checking before giving up:
- A card bought for the wrong region but not yet redeemed can often be gifted or sold to someone whose account matches. It has value; it just does not have value to you.
- A code you cannot find is usually still in your account. On our side, every code lives in My orders independently of whether the email arrived.
- A code that has genuinely never worked — as opposed to one rejected for region — is the seller's responsibility. Keep the order number and the exact error text.
- Roblox Credit sitting unconverted is not stuck; it converts on the Buy Robux page at the rate showing.
The one rule that prevents all of it
Check the account's region setting before you buy, not before you redeem.
Every unrecoverable case in this article was created at purchase, not at redemption. Thirty seconds in a settings screen prevents the entire category — and it matters more when paying with crypto, because there is no chargeback behind you. If you are still choosing, best regional gift cards with crypto ranks the brands by how badly a mistake hurts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my account region to match a card I already bought?
Sometimes, at a cost. Apple requires the balance spent to zero plus a cooldown; Google Play allows it roughly annually and discards the existing balance; PlayStation and Nintendo effectively do not allow it at all.
Does a VPN let me redeem another region's card?
No. The check reads your account's registered country or billing currency, not your connection — and region manipulation breaches most platforms' terms.
I bought the wrong region. Can I get a refund?
Once a code has been revealed it cannot be un-sold, which is the standard across this market and is written into our refund policy. An unredeemed card still has value to someone whose account matches.
Why did my Steam code fail when I live in the right country?
Because Steam matches the currency your store displays, not your country of residence. Check the store page — travel or a foreign payment method can leave it set to something else.
Does a Netflix card work outside the country it was bought for?
Usually yes, because Netflix locks to billing currency rather than country. A US card works on any account billed in US dollars.
Do game top-ups have region locks?
No. PUBG UC, Free Fire, Mobile Legends and Yalla Ludo go to a player ID with no store region involved. The risk there is the ID itself — Mobile Legends needs a Zone ID as well as a User ID, and the wrong zone credits a stranger permanently.
The code was rejected. What should I send to support?
The order number, the exact error message word for word, and which account or region you tried to redeem on. The wording is what separates the three failure types, so quote it rather than paraphrasing.
